3 ideas for a nature weekend in the Bouches-du-Rhône region

Romantic stay in the wild Camargue

Let’s set off together to discover the Camargue Regional Natural Park, its beaches of fine sand and silty soil, its reed beds, rice fields and wheat fields. It is a vast stage where the ballet of an exceptional fauna is performed by pink flamingos, herons and herds of bulls gathered in “manades”.

On foot or on horseback, nature lovers will discover the intimacy of this fragile area, shaped by the winds and the meeting between the Rhône and the Mediterranean.

We continue our itinerary in the capital of the Camargue: the village of Les Saintes Maries de la Mer. This is an opportunity to relive the Camargue and gypsy traditions of this city of welcome and pilgrimage. As you venture to the heights of the church, you can visit its famous crypt. But above all, enjoy a panoramic view of the village.

Are you passing through between spring and summer? The pink saltworks of Aigues-Mortes have a nice surprise in store for you. Indeed, you will be able to admire beautiful pink stretches of water and the different shades of the salt tables. A unique show around the soft colours of the Camargue to offer you a contemplation in pastel shades.

If you are in an adventurous mood, extend this escape by spending an unusual night in a caravan at the Mas de la Fouque. And this, without compromising on the comfort of a suite. For a romantic moment for two, the hotel’s indoor swimming pool allows you to relax in front of the grandiose spectacle of a beautiful and changing Camargue.

Séjour chaleureux dans une Marseille conviviale

For our second destination, we take height and accentuate the colorimetry of the landscape! Take some good sneakers and go to the Calanques National Park! Between wooded areas and contrasting coastlines, you will find a wealth of incredible biodiversity. To observe it, the choices are endless: hiking, boat trips, kayaking, scuba diving or climbing!

Afterwards, you can enjoy a well-deserved regenerating break at the Spa by Clarins at the InterContinental Marseille. In a Mediterranean aquatic universe with Provençal tones, the Balance massage with Essential Oils is a treat for the senses and the body.

For a stroll in complete serenity, the Parc Borély opens its doors to you. Also, it is Marseille’s unmissable garden and guardian of Marcel Pagnol’s childhood memories. On the program: 17 hectares of greenery embellished with sculptures, a beautiful rock waterfall, and different styles of gardens.

Finally, we strongly recommend you to discover the Palais Longchamp. Situated on the site of the Museums of Fine Arts and Natural History, it is a place of peace and quiet combining Second Empire architecture and botanical gardens. Take the time to stroll in the shade of the hundred-year-old trees, to admire the majestic palace surrounded by statues, and to let yourself be lulled by the song of the immense waterfall.

Before leaving, it will be pleasant to enjoy a cool drink in the old port of Marseille, a nice way to discover the endearing and friendly personality of the city.

Historic stay in the Alpilles mountains

Did you know that the Alpilles Regional Nature Park is the result of the long work of man and the land? More than 50,000 hectares of wetlands and dry areas are revealed to you. But also, an ecological richness due to the wild fauna that you will be able to meet on foot, by bike or on horseback. Between vineyards and olive groves, almond trees, poppies, orchards and archaeological jewels, you will find picturesque villages such as the Baux-de-Provence.

Why not put your suitcases down in Baumanière, a ***** hotel with a spectacular setting? Among the beautiful discoveries the hotel has to offer: the Oustau de Baumanière, a restaurant with three Michelin stars. With culinary creations carefully crafted by chef Glenn Viel, there is something for every taste buds!

Then, the village itself invites you on a journey through its many treasures. The museum dedicated to the work of Louis Jou, “architect of books and leases” and its collections of incunabula, old books and engravings by Dürer, Goya and Rembrandt are clearly worth a visit.

Finally, a bonus idea to complete this timeless Provencal escape: the Carrières de Lumières, immersive and phantasmagorical exhibitions. At the moment, Gaudí and Dalí are in the spotlight. An experience not to be missed!

So, we wish you a great discovery of the Bouches-du-Rhône that will bring a breath of fresh air to your holidays!
